Fixed vs Growth Mindset

Do you know one of the BIGGEST factors in determining whether or not you’ll be successful in your fitness and weight loss journey?

Believe it or not, it’s your MINDSET!!

You either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

Author Carol S Dweck says, “ The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”

A person with a growth mindset believes that your skills, your habits and your current truths about yourself can always continue to be developed and improved. This person is more likely to have faith in the process and to continue pushing forward optimistically when things get hard, or are taking too long.

And the other, a person with a fixed mindset tends to believe that they are good at what they’re good at and bad at what they’re bad at, and that is what it is. They tend to have less faith in long term processes and will be quicker to throw in the towel when things aren’t easily progressing or when faced with an obstacle or setback.

How you can begin to shift your mindset towards a growth mindset:

  • Begin to look at a setback as a chance to step up and come back even better! A challenge can never be a bad thing if it enables you to learn and grow! Embrace the struggle, trust, it IS helping you!!

  • Failure is not final.. Failure is feedback. Make this shift in your thinking! Like a good challenge, failing at something gives you the opportunity to step back, reassess and try another strategy. The only way to truly fail is to quit!

  • Get rid of the “All or Nothing” Mindset! Perfection is boring (and it also doesn’t really exist!) Focus on growth, improvement and progressing towards your goals over perfection! 50% is better than 0% any day! Even 5% is going to take you further than 0% :)

  • Above all else.. Give yourself grace!! You are human! There will always be a way to improve and this is what keeps us moving forward in life and what gets you out of bed in the morning! Enjoy the journey!
